Barrett-Jackson Auction Soars Inspite Of Global Economic Conditions

By Roger Rohrs and Jim Bennett

The Barrett –Jackson Auction Company is one of the world’s largest, innovative and forward thinking organizations in its segment. It provides products and services to classic and car collector vehicle owners, astute collectors, investors, automotive enthusiasts and OEM automotive companies and aftermarket products/services producers and organizations around the world.

Amid the 2008/9 historic global meltdown and asset reevaluation,  world class muscle cars from the Big  3, unique concept vehicles, hot rods, enduring classic vehicles and even the occasional aircraft, gathered speed and excitement in the 38th annual auction to a worldwide audience.  A cast of over 1,000 collector vehicles, state of the art “No Reserve Bidding” , 40 hours of Speed’s live high definition broadcast coverage provided up close and personal viewing to an appreciative home and office audience who have grown tired of recurring daily world events coverage.  To bottom line one metric of the auction’s performance fiscal performance is--- $55 million USD were sold in less than six days.  As other official data and information becomes available, other food for thought will be presented.

From a purely subjective viewpoint, we believe events like this not only helps demonstrate the international segments of creative spirit, respect and commitment to preserve important heritage but are coupled with new solutions and evolution to current and future opportunities.  Combining the automotive visual, audio and interpersonal dynamics with the enjoyment of competition of bidding unexpected underlying creative ideas pop out. We have observed collaboration and willingness to invest in opportunities that have enduring value and worth is a great formula for continued success for the auction, some of its attendees and the economies these people call home.

This auction happens to be the largest and first major auction of the season. Scottsdale is a perfect location with its mild winter weather conditions, international visitors and USA western base near global technology centers. The current challenges facing the Big 3 should perhaps be viewed from a wider perspective of what they produced in the latest 100 years as reflected by some of the vehicles being presented and their year round testing centers in the area.

Remember the global transportation sector, in which America plays the significant role in providing and using global transportation to billions of people worldwide for many decades should not be forgotten or under estimated.  We have seen and heard of elements of partnerships of discovery, innovation and development which will have major implications in design, transportation, energy, financial, medical, rational environmental development, cutting edge materials and space exploration to name a few.

A common thread running through this Scottsdale hi tech weave is love of memorable and truly creative personal transportation implanted in young impressions by family, working as adults on today’s challenges and now being truly being amazed with future developments and accomplishments like the private transportation to space and energy advances on the planet.  The automobile was and is central to much of this activity and some of these people attended 2009 Scottsdale auctions.
